Bean bags

So remember I wrote about these bean bags on a One Day Monday post? Well I finally finished them, although my desk currently looks like an explosion from a dry pulses factory has happened all over it. But I'm so pleased with how they worked out!

I am the type to read a tutorial quickly and then wing it when I get time to actually do it (mostly because I craft when my husband's hogging the laptop!).

Anyway, this is how I did it, it's pretty similar to Lil Blue Boo's so I'm not going to be offended if you hop over there and have a look. I'll be brief.

Cut squares about an inch larger than you want your final bean bags on a plain side do your letters if you are doing them.

Let dry then place right sides together and sew all the way around except for a 2 inch(ish) gap on a straight side (not near the corner). Back stitch on each of the open ends and clip the corners.

Turn and then topstitch. Again leaving the open 2 inches (don't worry about back stitching though).

Fill with your preferred dry goods, using a funnel is easiest but didn't stop me from getting rice in my jeans, on my desk and of course all over the floor! I used a combo of 8 years out of date lentils, 3 years out of date cous cous and rice (not out of date!).

(nice!)

My husband did ask what would happen if they got wet...after I'd sewed the holes shut.

"Well, they'll get bigger."

(Don't get them wet. Or be smarter and use split peas.)

Then top stitch your hole closed and you're done!

It will be hard for me to wait till Christmas. I love spelling silly words. And from this post you may now be able to guess what kind of boggle player I am. Yes I am the one with fifty three-letter words and one four-letter word. I never win.

And please don't...

me for being organised or for mentioning the C word in July. Read this post instead! :)

  5. When I taught kindergarten I had a set of letter beanbags and I let my kids use them ALL the time. They played games with them, put them in ABC order, spelled words for each other, read them to each other. They are such a great toy. I really like yours!

  6. Really nice Idea. Thank you for sharing. I saved it on my project list. Ps. I would use cherry pits. Here in Germany one can buy those washed and dried, but one can certaily do it himself. Just nedds some time. They are odourless and nothing happens if they get wet. Here you can also buy those cherry pit bean bags in the pharmacy. People warm them up in the oven or nuck them and put them on a boo boo or if the child is having a belly ache. When heated, one has to be carful as they can get very hot at first. They can also be cooled down in the freezer for other kinds of injuries and washed in the machine. In a pillow case or a laundry bag that is used for delicates.

  9. this is a great tutorial, I have been making little padded cushions for my numeracy and literacy students using these fabrics (http://www.spoonflower.com/collections/7069), but making them into bean bags would be a much better idea.
Oh well , better order some more fabric!
